Luc Anselin is Director of the Spatial Analysis Laboratory and Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He holds a half time appointment as Senior Research Associate in the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA). Dr. Anselin's research deals with various aspects of spatial data analysis and geographic information science, ranging from exploratory spatial data analysis to geocomputation, spatial statistics and spatial econometrics, with substantive applications in regional economics, environmental economics, real estate economics as well as in epidemiology, criminology and political science. Dr. Anselin has published widely on topics dealing with spatial and regional analysis, including a much cited book on Spatial Econometrics (Kluwer 1988), three edited volumes, over a hundred refereed journal articles and book chapters, as well as a large number of reports and technical publications. He is the developer of several software tools for the statistical analysis of spatial data, including SpaceStat, and, most recently, GeoDa.

Peter Newman is a computer scientist completing his B.S. at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. His interests are in system architecture and Geographic Information Systems.

Nancy Lozano Gracia is a PhD candidate from the Department of Agricultural and Consumer Economics. Her main background is in economics and she holds Masters degrees from the University of Maryland in the U.S. and Universidad de los Andes in Colombia in Agricultural and Environmental Economics. The title of her dissertation is “Spatial Econometric Aspects in the Estimation of Hedonic House Price Models.”  Her main interest is in applications of spatial analysis and spatial econometric methods to economic problems.

Luis Galvis has worked for the Banco de La Republica (Central Bank of Colombia) since 1998. He is a Research Assistant at the Regional Economics Applications Laboratory and the Spatial Analysis Laboratory of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interests include GIS, spatial econometrics, open-source programming, and applications to labor market and regional and urban economic analysis. He is currently a PhD student at the Department of Geography at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and he holds a M.S in economics from the same university. Myunghwa Hwang is a PhD student in the Geography Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She holds a Masters degree in Geography from Seoul National University in South Korea. She is interested in spatial clustering, spatial regression, and space-time visualization. Part of her research involves the application of these methods in the area of public health.

Julia Koschinsky joined SAL and the Urban Planning PhD program in January 2004 to focus on place-based impact measurement research, including quasi-experimental research design, spatial data exploration and modeling, and evaluation of housing programs.  At SAL, she is working on software documentation and training materials, user support, and as a teaching assistant to Dr. Anselin’s spatial analysis summer workshops.  She has Masters degrees from the Free University of Berlin, Germany and the State University of New York at Albany, and a GIS Certificate from the University of Washington at Seattle.
